A Beautiful Dark Review

Again, I wanted to do another book review before I forget everything. The book I’m going to write about is A Beautiful Dark by Jocelyn Davies. You can read a description of the book here. Like I said in my previous book review posts, I am going to be revealing spoilers. So if you don’t want to know what happens yet, then don’t read any further. Overall, I thought that the story was interesting. I will admit that when I originally read the description, I thought it was going to be about vampires because of how the description described the two main male characters. However, that is not the case. It turns out that they are like the Watchers from the TV show Charmed. However, they are not from Earth. They are from a different place entirely. All I can say is that after reading the story, the backstory that the two main male characters gave to the main female character reminds me a lot of the story of angels and fallen angels in the Bible. And the two main male characters infer that a lot of people on Earth based their religious stories on what the two main male characters are. I found that to be interesting. Anyway, I liked it. I would recommend it if you were to remember that the book is a work of fiction.

A Bewitching Review

Again, I am doing another book review on a book so I won’t forget what happened in the book, and my thoughts about it. The book I’m going to talk about in this post is Bewitching by Alex Flinn, and you can find a description here. A little forewarning though, I’m going to talk about some spoilers. Overall, I thought that the book was interesting. I really liked how the author incorporated various fairytales into the overall story, especially the one dealing with the Titanic. However, with that comes a warning. You have to know the each of the fairytales to understand the individual stories. The stories that you need to know is Hansel and Gretel, Cinderella, The Princess and the Pea, and The Little Mermaid. I also have a small warning for the Little Mermaid. You have to actually read the Hans Christian Andersen version, and not go solely on the 1989 movie. It will make a difference. The substory dealing with The Little Mermaid follows the plot of the original Hans Christian Andersen version much better than the 1989 movie. Anyway, I have a bit of a problem with the overall story. Personally, I don’t like how two of the smaller stories are not directly involved with the Emma storyline or the introduction of Kendra. I mean, I can see the relevance of the other stories to showing how Kendra has good intentions and how it can lead to unfortunate consequences. But I feel like the other two stories are a distraction to the main story of Emma. Anyway, I think that this story could lend itself to be turned into a TV show along the same lines of Once Upon A Time. I also think that if you like fairy tale inspired stories, like Once Upon A Time, you’ll like Bewitching.

A Bloodspell Review

Well, I wanted to do a review of the book, Bloodspell, by Amalie Howard, before I forget everything I read in the book. You can read the description here. First off, the book reminded me of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet because the two main characters are forbidden to be with each other because of who each person is. I can also see a little bit of the anime Sailor Moon, with there being a cat as a familiar. The story also reminds me of the first Twilight book, where a vampire is chasing the main character because the main character’s blood is extremely important. In any event, there are elements from this book that I see in TV shows, movies, and other books. Anyway, overall, I think that the book is pretty interesting. I mean, I have never seen a romance between a witch and a vampire before. I mean, there’s the typical vampire/human romance, a witch/human romance, a witch/demon romance, etc. But I have never seen a witch and a vampire together before. Anyway, there were a few things that I had questions about. The first thing was the abilities that Angie had. Are there others with the same abilities that Angie had? And how is it that Angie had gotten her abilities, when Gabriel, her brother, turned out to be a warlock? Are Angie’s abilities like a recessive genetic thing, like how red hair is? On a related note, are there other people out there who have different abilities? If so, what kind of abilities and how rare or common are they? My second thing was the relationship between Charla and Gabriel. Did Charla know all along about Gabriel being a witch? Of was it after Victoria rejected Gabriel? If it was after Victoria rejected Gabriel, then did Gabriel manipulate Charla’s feelings for him into doing what he wanted her to do for him? Anyway, those are my main questions about the book. I would recommend this book if you want to read a vampire/witch version of Romeo and Juliet that also has a bit of adventure mixed in.

Shattered Souls Review

About a month ago, I finished reading Shattered Souls by Mary Lindsey and I wanted to write a review before I forget the details of the book. You can read a summary of the book here. Overall, I liked the book. I liked the idea of the main character, Lenzi, who is someone who can speak to the dead and help them cross over to wherever they are supposed to be by letting the dead person come into her physical body and speak to them that way. I also liked the character of Alden, the guy who helps Lenzi understand her abilities. I also liked the idea that the characters of Lenzi and Alden, as well as other Speakers and Protecters, can be reincarnated. However, my biggest “problem” with the book is that it reminds me a lot of the TV show, Ghost Whisperer, in terms of a person who can speak to the dead and help them to move on. I kinda feel like the book is a slight rip-off of Ghost Whisper, but that has its own spin on it. All I can say is that if you liked Ghost Whisperer and don’t mind a book that is similar to it, then I recommend it.

The Secret Circle Canceled

Well, I was just looking the Wikipedia page for the TV show, The Secret Circle, because I wanted to know when the DVD was going to come out. As I was looking at the episode list, which is where they also show the DVD release dates, it showed that the show was canceled. Just to confirm, I looked up any recent news articles dealing with the show. It was confirmed on Friday. All I can say that I am not happy. I really liked the show and I was really looking forward to seeing the potential plot lines that were introduced at the end of the finale.

2012 Hawaii AIDS Walk

I know I don’t really talk about my personal life much on this blog, but I just wanted to get this out there because I think it’s an important to raise awareness for the topic. About two weeks, on April 15th, I participated in the 2012 Hawaii AIDS Walk in Kapiolani Park as extra credit for a class. I just wanted to show some pictures and video that I took to help promote the Hawaii AIDS Walk.
