Last night, I was watching this documentary where they posed the possibility that Eleonore von Schwarzenberg, an 18th century Austrian princess, was an accused vampire. Personally, I don’t give much credence to the vampire accusations. However, it made me think. I took a class last year that was about the witchcraft hysteria. You might ask how this is related? Within the first few days of the class, that teacher brought up the fact that the witch hysteria was mostly in western Europe while the vampire hysteria was mostly in eastern Europe. I never really thought about it, but I’m not surprised. A lot of the vampire related things that I’ve read or watched point towards a hysteria more in eastern Europe. On the other hand, a majority of witch hunts, as far as I know, were in western Europe.
